If you want to revisit some of that good ol’ nostalgia from the early 2000s, read on for a trip down (a cyber) memory lane. With a little bit of research, however, I found that some of the best sites from when I was a kid are still around. As a farewell salute, the site’s programmers finally let those darn penguins flip the iceberg.Įven though it’s common knowledge that websites come and go, you can’t help but feel wistful about your childhood. More recently, Club Penguin shut down in March 2017, much to the dismay of past (and active!) users. I, for one, am still rather bitter about Virtual Magic Kingdom’s shutdown in 2008 (Disney claimed VMK was never meant to be permanent, but sure, go ahead and rip my preteen heart out). As a trailblazing generation, kids living in the early 2000s used the world wide web to have fun (which may have led to the social media savvy of most millennials today).Īs time has passed, however, millennials have had to part ways with some of their beloved childhood websites. During our elementary years, we came across an expansive array of sites to peruse, whether they were in computer class-where, let’s be honest, all we learned was how to use PowerPoint and make high scores on Brain Pop games-or at home on the family computer. When you weren’t playing outside with your Skip-It or watching “Avatar: The Last Airbender,” you were experiencing the best of pixelated online gaming.Īs millennials, we make up the generation that grew up with technology for the first time, playing games from Mario to Runescape and watching our gadgets advance along with our years. You know you’re a late –nineties kid when you remember spending your days wasting away in front of clunky Compaq computers, clicking away at the screen.

One day, I 'forgot' about all the germs that come down with the presents (downloads) and skipped the extra scanning (usually VirusTotal) and suddenly found myself with a non responding computer! I tried Microsoft virus remover tool (it wouldn't even allow me to open start / settings to use my regular antivirus!) but after 15 hours it was up to nowhere. I don't know about the company itself and probably no antivirus will be affective enough against the growing sins of the generation, but for me, it was a miracle I downloaded at some point their virus removal tool (free) - which I was 'going to put onto a stick for just in case' but didn't manage to. Virus removal tool saved my computer in minutes! Our four businesses can't survive in a Sophos environment with virtually zero tech support.# We have also put in place a plan to phase out all of our Sophos equipment and software over the next year. I told our CEO that we are going to have to hire an outside Sophos engineer because clearly Sophos does not support their products (as evidenced by the reviews here). We have about a quarter of our employees using cell hotspots just to survive. I responded again but didn't hear until the 25th. Then, I didn't hear again until the 19th. I received an email asking me questions about the issues on the 13th from a technician. We have workstations that can't connect to the network or whose download speeds are extremely slow. I am now looking for a new anti virus provider that can look after me as my degree is in physics and not computer science!Įxactly the same support issues as "Zero Support for Critical Issue I know the episode I will describe is hard to believe but I wrote a trouble ticket with Sophos on November 12th (Today is December 3). My question is that I thought I had bought Sophos so that it would clean threats up for me. Then gave me a US (I am in Spain) phone number for help. Tech support gave me more advanced techy reading to do. I went to the help facility and the person there told me to talk to tech support. Please follow the instructions for removing applications." Which led me to a load of technical stuff I don't understand (remember I am a Home user). The system told me I had this - Coinhive JavaScript cryptocoin miner Then I went to "read more" and there was something that could be dowloaded "to clean up viruses that my software has missed"! Some advert for Sophos! Then I read this "Recovery Instructions: Cleanup for this potentially unwanted application (PUA) is available with Sophos Anti-Virus for Windows 2000/XP/2003, version 6.0. I thought Sophos Home was supposed to take care of security for me. In the early years of social media, publications tried to play nice with platforms, seeing the audience potential as irresistible. Publishers' rocky marriage with social media But the tech companies pocketed most of the advertising dollars, something that has become even more pronounced as a pullback in ad spending wallops both the media and tech sectors. In other words, news outlets used social media to reach people. "But what we saw is that the tech platforms, specifically Google and Facebook, ended up controlling that digital advertising infrastructure." "The news industry didn't really have a profit model other than trying to get eyeballs and earn digital advertising revenue," said Courtney Radsch, who studies technology and media at UCLA. The juggernaut platforms have always been something of a blessing and a curse to publications. The shift from social media that Smith mentions is another pain point for the industry, as chaos engulfs Twitter under Elon Musk, and other legacy social media platforms, like Facebook, lose their luster for news sites. Smith's note of optimism is perhaps a vocational requirement, since he is again at the helm of an online news site, Semafor, which launched last fall. "But readers and viewers still want to understand the world." "I think the current moment is the product of both a huge shift away from social media, and a tough economy," said Ben Smith, a former editor in chief of BuzzFeed News and author of "Traffic," a history of the rise and fall of BuzzFeed. The turmoil caused by a historic slowdown in digital advertising is sparking worries among staff at online media companies about further and possibly deeper cuts beyond the mass layoffs and abrupt closures over the last few months. And there are no signs of when the punishing developments will let up. It has been trying times for digital media. Gawker went out of business, again, in February. Vox recently laid off nearly 10% of its staff. Vice is slashing staff and closing its flagship broadcast program, Vice News Tonight. The movies that played the role of Wild Things, Deep Rising, Fallen and Dark City twenty years later were Annihilation (a horror sci-fi adventure starring Natalie Portman, Gina Rodriguez, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Tuva Novotny and Tessa Thompson), Jennifer Lawrence’s Red Sparrow, Alicia Vikander’s Tomb Raider, David Oyelowo’s Gringo, John Boyega’s Pacific Rim: Uprising (which played the role of Lost in Space by tossing Black Panther out of the top spot in its sixth weekend) and, most ironically, Storm Reed’s Ava DuVernay-directed A Wrinkle in Time. For Black Panther, it was because the lessons of its $700 million domestic/$1.346 billion gross came too late. For Titanic, it was because Hollywood didn’t listen. Jordan actioner shares one grim attribute with the period-piece tragedy: Its lessons didn’t quite take. In terms of legs, total gross and the ability to steamroll the competition, Black Panther was the modern-day equivalent to James Cameron’s Titanic, ironically arriving 20 years after the Winslet/DiCaprio romance sailed to $600 million domestic and $1.8 billion worldwide. It has been just over two years since Ryan Coogler and Joe Robert Cole’s genre-hopping action drama took the worldwide box office by storm. The film has been on Netflix for around 1.5 years, which is why it wasn’t a launch title when the Disney streaming service debuted last November. Florence Kasumba, Chadwick Boseman, Danai Gurira, and Lupita Nyong'o in 'Black Panther' Disney and Marvelīlack Panther arrives on Disney+ this morning, which means… well, it doesn’t mean much. Instead of eating your naked egg, just experiment with it. Well, I suppose you could, but given the amount of vinegar that probably moved past the membrane into the egg, it’s most likely not going to taste all that great. Some have asked if you could store the egg in the fridge, then cook it and eat it. That is not how to treat eggs you are going to eat! Even if you stored the egg in the refrigerator, I still would not recommend eating the raw egg. Keep in mind you created your egg by soaking a raw egg in vinegar sitting at room temperature for a few days. Several visitors have posed the question, “Can I eat my naked egg?” I would N OT recommend eating a naked egg prepared this way. Thank you Evers Ding for permission to use your photo and check out the rest of Evers egg photos on his blog. I might call it a “dehydrated naked egg.” And side-by-side is a brilliant red naked egg soaked in red food coloring. The water will once again move across the membrane and fill the egg with water again.Ī big thank you to one of our visitors who grabbed a great photo of what happens when you soak a naked egg in corn syrup for a few days. If you get tired of the shriveled egg look, you can reverse the process by just dunking the egg back in a cup of water. If you leave your egg in the syrup long enough it will begin to look something like a huge raisin – with of course a yoke inside. Once inside the syrup, the water inside the egg begins to move across the semi-permeable egg membrane to equalize the water concentration. Corn syrup has very little water content. Slip your Naked Egg into a cup filled with corn syrup and let it sit for a day, or two, or more and you will begin to see your egg begin to shrink and look sort of baggy. A common substance you may have at home that fits this requirement is corn syrup. Now that you know about osmosis, you might ask “can I make my egg shrink” or shrivel up? Of course, you just need a liquid that has only a little bit of water. This is a nice way to verify that the water in the cup is really moving through the egg membrane and not just coloring the outside. You can even color the inside of your egg if you soak it in some water with food coloring. This means the egg will swell as the water moves inside and get larger. Osmosis equalizes – or makes the concentration of water on both sides of the egg membrane the same. This process of water moving through a membrane is called osmosis. If you put the egg in a cup of (100%) water, the water will begin to move inside the egg through the membrane to equalize the amount of water inside and outside of the egg membrane. The makeup of the inside of the egg is around 90% water. If you want to see your egg get really big, simply put it in a cup filled with water. You might want to do this experiment outside. Keep in mind that eventually this is going to get messy when it the membrane breaks. How far above the table can you drop your egg and have it survive by bouncing? I would suggest you start at one inch, then try two inches, and so on. You have probably already noticed that your naked egg is kind of rubbery. Naked eggs are cool, but experimenting with them is even cooler. The membranes are semi-permeable and allow water to move through them. This is because some of the vinegar (and some of the water in the vinegar) has moved through the membranes to the inside of the egg. Notice that the egg is a bit bigger than when you first started. However, I would suggest you fill a cup with fresh vinegar and soak the egg for at least one more day.Īfter two days of soaking you should have a pretty cool Naked Egg. Depending on your particular egg, you may already have a naked egg. Give it try, just be very careful, you don’t want to break the egg, it’s getting more fragile as the shell is slowly dissolved. It will rub off as a white powdery substance. Using a spoon to fish the egg out might seem like a good idea, but I’ve seen a few eggs break or get damaged when using a spoon to remove them.Īt this point you may be able to literally rub the shell off the egg with your fingers. I would suggest pouring the liquid into another cup and catching the egg in your hand.
Id.īy way of history, the NTSB revised Part 830 of its regulations in August 2010 to clarify that the accident/incident notification requirements apply to Civil UAS. To assist drone operators with this analysis, in July 2016, the NTSB issued an “Advisory to Operators of Civil Unmanned Aircraft Systems in the United States.” (“NTSB Advisory”) In the NTSB advisory, the NTSB notes that commercial or business civil UAS operators also have to comply with the NTSB’s accident and incident reporting requirements in Part 830 of title 49, Code of Federal Regulations. In addition to the Part 107 FAA reporting requirements, a drone operator needs to understand that there may also be separate accident reporting requirements to the NTSB. NTSB Accident Reporting Requirements: Separate But Not Equal If a small UAS is involved in a reportable accident under Part 107, the accident report must then be submitted within 10 calendar days of the operation either electronically at by telephone to a FAA Regional operations Center (ROC) or the nearest jurisdictional FSDO. Similarly, if the aircraft causes $200 worth of damage to property whose fair market value is $600, that accident is also not required to be reported because the repair cost is below $500. Because the fair market value is below $500, this accident is not required to be reported. … For example, a small UAs damages a property whose fair market value is $200, and it would cost $600 to repair the damage. The following example provided in the Advisory Circular gives practical guidance for the real-world application of these principles: Under Part 107, an accident must be reported to the FAA if it causes damage to property other than the drone itself, if the cost is greater than $500 to repair or replace the property (whichever is lower). Second, the Remote Pilot needs to assess whether any reportable property damage occurred. head trauma, broken bones, or lacerations to the skin that require suturing). In this system, injuries are ranked on a scale of 1-6 as follows:ĪC 107-2 notes that a “serious injury” would be one in which the injured person requires hospitalization, but the injury is “full reversible” (i.e. FAA Advisory Circular 107-2 (“AC 107-2”) notes that a “serious injury” is one which is a Level 3 or higher on the Abbreviated Injury Scale (AIS) of the Association for the Advancement of Automotive Medicine (AAAM). Under these scenarios, an accident must be reported to the FAA within 10 calendar days. The first analysis a Remote Pilot must undertake when determining whether an accident is required to be reported to the FAA under Part 107 is whether a “serious injury” or a “loss of consciousness” occurs. The fair market value of the property does not exceed $500 in the event of a total loss. The cost of repair (including materials and labor) does not exceed $500 or No later than 10 days after an operation that meets the criteria of either paragraph (a) or (b) of this section, a remote pilot in command must report to the Federal Aviation Administration in a manner acceptable to the Administrator, any operation of the small unmanned aircraft involving at least: In addition to containing certain regulatory guidelines- such as the requirements that an unmanned aircraft weigh less than 55 pounds and be operated solely in the Visual Line of Sight (VLOS) of the operator at nearly all times- the FAA regulations also contain an accident reporting requirement if the accident results in either personal injury or property damage. Part 107 contains the current regulatory framework for the operation of small UAS in the National Airspace. FAA Accident Reporting RequirementsĪs commercial drone owner/operators are now well-aware, 14 C.F.R. Included at the end of this article, are several practical examples of when FAA and/or NTSB accident reports would be required during commercial drone operations. The following is an overview of the current regulations related to drone accident reporting. Although the respective regulations complement each other in many respects, the FAA and NTSB requirements are not identical. Aside from the obvious monetary concerns, however, commercial drone owners and operators need to be familiar with the accident reporting requirements of both the Federal Aviation Administration (“FAA”) and National Transportation Safety Board (“NTSB”). When a corporate drone crashes, it can be one of the worst-case scenarios for owners who rely on UAS technology to conduct a wide-array of business functions. Understanding FAA & NTSB Drone Accident Reporting Requirements Honorable mention goes to these guys: ADORABLE. It doesn’t hurt that he’s voiced by one of my favorite actors, Ed O’Neill. The endless amount of sight gags the animators were able to pull off with Hank kept me guessing the entire movie. He goes out of his way to help her search for her parents. This gruff guy doesn’t dole out the touchy-feelies, but like everyone who gets to know Dory, he learns to care for her. My favorite character in the movie was easy to pick out but not always so easy to find him. Oh, and hey, Dory really CAN speak whale!īailey’s special skill (you’ll learn all about it!) is key in helping Dory complete her quest. We get to see some of our old favorites from the first movie, but the real stars are the new friends we meet on Dory’s quest.ĭestiny and Bailey, voiced by the fun Kaitlin Olson and Ty Burrell, become important friends to Dory.ĭestiny comes from Dory’s past and helps her remember more about her life before she got lost. This starts a quest to find out what happened to Dory, where she came from, and hopefully to meet back up with her parents. Soon it becomes clear that Dory is having some memories come back to her about her own family. It’s a sweet moment recognizing that Dory seems to have found her adopted family unit in the little clown fish family. The movie starts a year after Finding Nemo with Dory, Nemo and Marlin living together. My teen loved this one, and laughed the whole movie through. That should tell you how high our expectations were for this film. Yes, my big, tough teen wanted very badly to see Finding Dory. Y’all, he asked if he could go instead of my little one. I took Luke, now 13, to see the movie at an advanced media screening on Tuesday night. I’m sure Ellen edged me out for that top spot. When the announcement about Finding Dory came a few years ago, I think I was the second happiest person in America. It was the first movie for both my young sons and they absolutely loved it! This was early on in my mom career so to speak, and it’s always been a sentimental favorite in my house. I have great memories associated with the movie Finding Nemo. The app will then show you the outcome of the flip, either heads or tails. The app has a fairly simple interface: select the coin you want to toss, then tap the button to start the toss. Heads or Tails app is a virtual coin toss simulator that lets you test your luck and see which side of the coin is heads more often. Just select the number of flips you want to do and the app will do the rest! What is heads or tails? A stronger coin toss (more revolutions), decreases the bias.Have you ever wished you could toss a coin and get heads or tails just like in the real world? Well, now you can with the Heads or Tails app – a virtual coin toss simulator that lets you toss a coin to see if it comes up heads or tails. The same coin flip results can be produced by the same coin-flipping conditions. Certain conditions can produce the exact same result repeatedly, which is why there's some determinism to the coin-flip.The above mentioned spinning bias is likely to be present if the coin is tossed and left to tumble to the ground.Tossing the coin and allowing it to clatter on the floor will add some randomness to the game. To promote fairness, allow the coin to clatter on a floor surface before picking it up.The chance that the coin ends with the heavier side down can be much greater if it is spun than tossed. Spun coins may show "huge bias", which can cause them to fall tails-up up to 80% of the times. To put it another way, you can only toss if you want fair play. The coin will have a 51% chance to land on the same face it was launched from if it is tossed and caught. If it begins as heads, it has a 51% chance of ending as heads. These are some of their observations and inferences: Īfter Fischbach was born, the family moved to Cincinnati, Ohio, but his parents divorced when he was young.
